Windows 10 version 2004, or the May 2020 Update, is currently in the Release Preview ring of the Windows Insider program, with Microsoft expected to roll it out later this month to production devices.
And while the software giant is still giving the finishing touches to this highly-anticipated feature update, it’s also preparing for another big change: the introduction of the new Chromium-based Microsoft Edge as the new browser in Windows 10 version 2004.
The company has recently shipped a new update to devices in the Release Preview ring that essentially brings the new Edge to these computers to replace the legacy version. In other words, Microsoft started the automatic rollout of the new browser in Windows 10 May 2020 Update, and there’s a chance the company is testing this approach before it uses it on production devices as well.

As the people over at TenForums noticed, once the browser is installed, a reboot of the Windows 10 device is required. A welcome screen is then displayed to tell users that “we’ve updated Windows to bring you a brand new web browser, built for Windows 10,” after which the new Edge launches.
Needless to say, this new Chromium-based Microsoft Edge is automatically configured as the default browser on the device, and on launch, it prompts users to migrate their data from the legacy version of the browser.

Windows 10 version 2004 will go live later this month for the first wave of production devices, and Microsoft will ship it in stages in an attempt to prevent major issues from hitting a bigger number of computers. However, alternative download methods will still be offered, such as the Media Creation Tool and stand-alone ISO images that will allow for a fresh install on any device.
